Does it sometimes feel like you’re the only one in the house who knows where anything goes. The scissors? In the drawer by the fridge (obviously!). The laundry basket? Surprise, it’s not just décor. A backpack left on the floor apparently “ready for the next school day,” but actually it belongs on the hook you conveniently screwed into the wall. And yet… somehow, no one else seems to notice.
Sound familiar? Believe me when I say you’re not the only one. This is where you taking the time right now to model organization and tidying techniques for your family can make a HUGE difference. When they see YOU doing it, and involving them in the process, they’ll understand that it doesn’t just make your home look nice for a day or a weekend. It’s so much more than that.
Making a point of modelling these habits, in a way that your family can understand, it sets the stage for long-term habits that actually stick AND take the mental load off you! Make it a fun game: who can pick up 10 things that fastest? A challenge: Let’s see how many days in a row we can put out shoes away and hang up our backpacks. Incorporate our fave tidy tool, a 10-minute tidy! Play a playlist every night before bed and involve everyone in your home. There are SO many options for easily inserting this into your daily routine.
It’s about taking pride in your space and making less work for other members of the family (AKA you). Sounds pretty good right? Read on my friend!
01 Start with modeling, not mandating
Instead of telling everyone to “just clean up,” show them how you do it.
When your kids see you sorting toys by type or folding towels a certain way, they start to absorb those habits. The same goes for your partner, if they see that every item has a specific spot and that putting it away is quick and easy, it’s a lot more motivating to jump on board.
Label if you need to, that way, when something isn’t in it’s spot, it allows you the freedom to say, “look for the label!” instead of having to show them where it goes, which usually leads to you doing it for them… again.
Important reminder: It’s not about perfection. It’s about showing what tidy looks like in YOUR home. When you model systems that actually make life easier, it slowly becomes second nature for everyone else, too.
02 Involve everyone from the start
Let your family have a say! Maybe your kids prefer bins with pictures instead of labels, or your partner wants their coffee station set up in a specific way. The more they feel part of the system, the more likely they are to maintain it. Plus, taking charge of the original organization of a space means that they can take the responsibility of ensuring that zone stays that way.
It’s also a great way to teach responsibility. When kids help organize their toys or their closets, they start to understand what it means to take care of their things, and that’s a win for everyone.
03 The magic of accountability
When everyone knows the system, everyone can help maintain it.
No more “Mom, where’s my ____?” ten times a day. You’ll start to see them naturally putting things back where they belong. It takes some effort upfront, yes, but over time, you’ll be doing less picking up, less reminding, and less managing. And I promise it will be worth it.
It’s like teaching your family to be teammates in the daily game of “keep the house running smoothly.” Once they’re in the rhythm, it’s SO much smoother.
04 The payoff = less work (for you!)
The early days of getting everyone involved might feel like you’re managing a mini workshop, so give yourself grace, there’s lots of teaching and lots of explaining. But give it a few weeks, and you’ll start to notice:
Your partner hanging up their coat without being asked.
Your kids proudly putting their laundry away.
Less clutter buildup because everyone knows what “tidy” looks like.
And that, my friend, is the sweet spot. The spot where your home feels calm and functional because everyone who lives there and used the home is on board.
The takeaway
Yes, it takes a bit of time and energy to get everyone started. But when it clicks? It’s worth every minute. And let me tell you this: it’s NEVER to late to start. Whether you just moved in with your partner or you’ve lived in your home with 5 children for the last 15 years, there’s always time.
You’re not just organizing your home, you’re teaching your family how to live more intentionally, take responsibility for their space, and make daily life smoother for everyone.
And if you’re ready to get those systems started (and make them family-proof) send us a message, we’d love to keep you accountable and cheery you on! And if you’re ready to ask for help with the process, you know where to find us.
