It’s that magical stretch of the year: fall, thanksgiving, Halloween, family photos, winter magic and Christmas. Seems this is the time of the year when our homes start filling up with cozy colors, sparkly lights, and festive touches everywhere you look.
It’s also the time when those holiday bins start multiplying like gremlins (hello kids of the 80s!) in storage closets and under the stairs crawlspaces across the country.
But decorating for the seasons doesn’t have to mean adding more clutter. With a few simple systems, you can make your home feel festive AND stay organized, all season long.
Use what you have (and let go of the rest)
Before you buy another pumpkin, wreath, or garland, take a peek at what you already own.
If you’re replacing or upgrading something this year, that’s totally fine (great aunt Edna’s homemade string garland might not be forever!) just make sure to donate or recycle the old version instead of tucking it back into storage “just in case.”
Not only does this keep your bins lighter, literally, it also helps you decorate with intention and avoid drowning in extras year after year.
One bin per holiday or per room
Here’s a simple rule that makes seasonal decorating a breeze: one bin per holiday or one bin per room. I know, I know, you love allll the things, but hear me out: your bin can be as big or small as you like… that’s right, buy the big one if you need it!
And when you get something new, it has to fit in the bin. If it doesn’t? That’s your cue to let go of something else, be ruthless! This keeps your collection manageable and ensures you’re only keeping the decor you actually love and use.
Swap decor, don’t layer it
Instead of adding seasonal pieces on top of your everyday decor, swap them out.
Putting up a Halloween wreath? Pop your fall one into the fall bin until November rolls around.
Bringing out those adorable fall throw pillows? Store your regular ones in the ‘fall decor’ bin until the season is over.
This not only keeps things from looking overcrowded but also makes cleanup and rotation way easier.
The golden rule: if you didn’t use it, get rid of it
Once the season’s over and you’re packing things away, take a minute to notice what didn’t make it out this year.
If it stayed in the bin untouched, odds are it’ll stay there again next year, and that’s just wasted space. Donate it and give it a second life somewhere it’ll actually be enjoyed. We love taking decor to places like senior homes, care facilities, and childcare providers. Who doesn’t want to spread some holiday cheer?
Less waste, less clutter, and less hauling for you next season, win, win, win.
The big picture
Keeping your holiday decor organized isn’t about having less joy, it’s about having less stress. When everything has a place (and a purpose), decorating becomes fun again instead of overwhelming.
