Listen. We’ve all been there. Yes, even me.
You want your home to feel calm, organized, and put together, right?
But the thought of tackling an entire closet, pantry, or basement in one go? Immediately exhausting.
So you finally get up the nerve to start, and then? Mid-project regret syndrome.
Why? Because it always gets worse before it gets better when you take on a big space.
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to do it all at once.
Seriously!
In fact, I’m giving you permission to start ridiculously small with one item a day.
Yes, really.
One. Single. Item.
Here’s why one item a day works
The beauty of this method is that it’s easy, fast, and not overwhelming.
We’ve said it before, it takes 21-days to form a habit. That means, if you remove one thing from your home every day for three weeks, decluttering will start to feel as natural as pouring your morning coffee.
And before you know it? You’ll look around and realize…
You have more space.
You know where things are.
You’re not holding onto stuff “just in case.”
Sounds pretty good, but how do you decide what to do with the things?
Once you pick it up, here are the questions you can ask yourself:
Is it’s recyclable? → pop it in the recycling bin.
Is it in need of repair? → fix it or schedule a time to repair it.
Does it belong to someone else? → return it.
Is this serving me in this season of life? → donate it to the best place in town so it can have a second life.
Is it not usable by anyone else and doesn’t fit any of the categories? → it’s totally ok to throw it out. Promise.
Let’s break this down with real-life examples:
The mug you never use that’s taking up space in your cupboard.
The extra phone charger that doesn’t even fit your phone anymore.
The sweater you keep “just in case” but haven’t worn in years.
The kitchen gadget that sounded amazing but now collects dust.
Be honest with yourself (like brutally honest) and remember how this works, the less stuff you have, the less stuff you have to manage.
Why this works long term
This isn’t about a one-time clean-out.
It’s about building a decluttering muscle that works in the background of your everyday life.
When you make a habit of noticing what you don’t use, need, or love, and then letting it go, your home naturally stays more organized. Yes, naturally. This won’t always be something you have to think about.
One thing in, one thing out, will be a saying that plays automatically in your head. Just like that song from your childhood about not putting things in your mouth, ick. (80’s babies are with me here😉)
Here’s your challenge:
Today, find one item to part with.
Tomorrow, do it again.
Keep going for 21-days.
And then for more.
And then more.
Then, sit back and notice how much lighter your home (and your mind) feels.
And you know, that if you’re ready to go bigger than “one item a day,” you know where to find us. We can turn a closet, kitchen, or other zone in your home into the functionally organized space you’ve been dreaming of, usually in just one day. We’re here to help, with no judgment ever. ✨
