We know you’re not organizing your house to impress Pinterest (although we looove looking there for inspo). You’re doing it so your space works for your real day-to-day life, for the real humans, and fur babies, who are moving through it every day. And that means organizing with them in mind.
Here’s how to make your home make sense for everyone under your roof:
Got Roommates or Renters?
Living with other adults? Whether you’re all besties, quiet cohabiters, or somewhere in between, setting up clear common area systems is key.
01. Define the zones. Create designated spots for shared items — like some hooks by the door for keys, a basket on the counter for mail, or labelled shelves in the fridge.
02. Label the expectations. Literally or figuratively. A simple “please rinse your dishes” sticky note or a shared chores whiteboard can keep things polite and tidy.
03. Keep it simple. The less complicated the system, the more likely everyone will use it. No one wants to decode your 12-step shoe cubby protocol, seriously, believe me. I was once that annoying roommate right here in Lethbridge.
Got Kids?
Little people come with little things… and those things seem to multiply overnight (IYKYK). But the secret is to make organization kid-friendly.
01. Put it at their level. Hooks they can reach. Drawers they can open. It’s about making independence easy.
02. Clear bins = clear results. When they can see what’s inside, they’re more likely to use it (and put it back!).
03. Use colour like a pro. Colour-coding by kid, category, or room helps everyone stay on track — even the non-readers. Colour is one of the first ways that children categorize, start them young!
Got Pets?
Yup, even the four-legged family members need a system. They have stuff too!
01. Designate their space. Whether it’s a whole mudroom corner or just a basket in the pantry, your pet needs a spot that’s just for them.
02. Seal the food. Keeps things fresh and keeps curious noses out. And give it a designated spot too, that way, EVERYone in the house can help feed Fido!
03. Bin the toys. A low bin or basket works great for storing toys for pets. Plus, some pets even learn to grab (or return!) their favourites. Cute and functional = win-win.
At the end of the day, organizing your home isn’t about perfection. It’s about making your space feel good, function well, and actually work for the people (and pets) who live there.
