We’ve all been there—staring at a cluttered space, feeling overwhelmed by where to start. But here’s a secret: one of the most effective ways to transform a chaotic area is to clear it out completely. Yes, it takes time, energy, and commitment, but the clarity that comes from seeing an empty space makes the process so worthwhile.
When you remove everything from a space, you give yourself the ability to see it with fresh eyes. Without the clutter, you can better evaluate what should go back in and what doesn’t belong. This method allows you to design your space intentionally, focusing on how it can work for you, rather than just finding a place for everything you already own.
Think of it like a blank canvas — it’s much easier to create a masterpiece when you’re starting fresh. So, whether it’s your pantry, closet, or kitchen, clearing the space gives you the opportunity to reimagine it with function, flow, and ease.
It might take longer than you think!
One thing to remember is that this process can take time (and that’s okay!). Organizing a space isn’t always a quick job. Here are some real-life examples:
A 4-shelf pantry has taken us a minimum of 3 hours to reorganize from top to bottom.
A large eat-in kitchen can take up to 14 hours to fully declutter and organize.
Don’t rush through it. Give yourself grace and allow ample time to do it right, so you can enjoy the benefits for months (and years!) to come.
Don’t do it alone!
Clearing out an entire space on your own can be overwhelming, so don’t hesitate to ask for help. Whether it’s calling in a trusted friend, partner, or even hiring a professional, having another person there can lighten the load, offer support, and keep you motivated.
If the idea of doing it alone feels too daunting, remember, there’s no shame in asking for help! That’s what we’re here for too.😉
Set yourself up forsSuccess
Once your space is empty, having a clear plan for what comes next will set you up for an easier, more efficient organizing process. Here’s what you’ll need:
A plan for the donations
Let’s be honest: decluttering often leads to a lot of items needing new homes. Whether it’s donating clothes, old furniture, or non-perishables, make sure you’ve got a plan for where those things are going. And hey, if you need help with donation haul away — hi, that’s one of our specialties!
A bin for recycling
You’ll likely come across plenty of recyclable items during your clear-out, from paper and cardboard to plastic containers. Have a bin handy so you can easily separate out what can be recycled as you go.
A vehicle or trailer to haul to the dump
Depending on the size of your project, you might end up with larger items that need to be taken to the dump. Make sure you’ve got the right resources, whether it’s a vehicle, trailer, or help from a friend, to get rid of those things once they’ve been sorted. (And, if you’re local to YQL, the Lethbridge dump is free on Saturdays!)
Ample storage for your space
Once everything is categorized and downsized, it’s time to put it back in a way that works for you. Make sure you have the right storage solutions — whether it’s bins, baskets, shelving, or containers — to make your space functional and easy to maintain in the long run.
Clearing out a space may feel like a big task at the start, but the clarity, simplicity, and satisfaction that come from doing it right are completely worth it. Remember, take your time, ask for help, and set yourself up for success. You’ll be amazed at how transformative it can be, not just for your space, but for your overall peace of mind.
